Fuck Yeah Life on Mars

Relating to the Emmy award-winning TV show Life on Mars (UK). And how the American remake is inferior to the original.

Due to lack of new Mars-Ashes canon, related shows will be posted: Mad Dogs, Case Histories (by Monastic Productions) and NBC's Awake (LOM-esque US show coming soon this fall). Jason Isaacs stars in the latter two.

What Shaz really sees in the black abyss when she accepts the job at CID.

All this talk of Father Time just makes my brain go, “Time Lord!” Super crack. It didn’t help that ‘Life on Mars’ played in the background. And also there was MAD CACKLING!

Sam Tyler is now a Time Lord. Yes. Because fandom smooshes are f-u-n.

jojolike:

Scanning David Bowie’s discography brought us the rather brilliant Life On Mars set in 1973 which was suitably and inevitably followed by Ashes to Ashes, which had moved on 8 years to 1981. Where next? Presumably the 90s. A few title suggestions for a hypothetical sequel…

Hallo Spaceboy

Hallo Spaceboy 1995
“Spaceboy, you’re sleepy now
Your silhouette is so stationary
You’re released but your custody calls
And I want to be free”

From the very first verse this song screams the story of a time-traveller confused and bidding for freedom, ring any bells Sam Tyler, Alex Drake?
“Custody” - it’s like David Bowie got shot while in a car accident and found himself in the future watching Life On Mars / Ashes to Ashes / Hallo Spaceboy only so that he could return to his present day and release these songs and start the literature ball rolling.

Law

Law 1997
“In a house a man drops dead
As he hits the floor he sighs, ‘What a morning!’”

Possible opening scene and troubling story arch for the series as the main character (Philip Glenister) tries to figure out where the mornings events have taken him and the audience ponder over his pending realisation or doubtful escape. Oh, did I not explain a retired Gene Hunt returns to the 90s to solve the same crimes and read over the same cases, with many teasing remarks from Ray Carling and Chris Skelton about his ageing looks. Is Gene Hunt back in time, mental or in hell. Maybe if he could find 90s Gene then he could finally retire. (Well, you didn’t think there would be two Hunt’s did you? Think realistically…)

Dead Man Walking

Dead Man Walking 1997
This spin-off would have the chance to exploit the music video in the nature of the Ashes to Ashes clown as well as the small year gap between the show and real life providing the opportunity of a Parent Trap pairing where the main character has to team with his younger more immature and conflicting self to put life back on the right track. The whole series obviously would switch between believing and not believing that that is in fact his younger self, of course.

As an extra bonus the younger self could be caught up in the chemical generation a la Human Traffic as a nice little reference to John Simm’s previous work.

Note: This post should not be taken entirely seriously.

Ashes to Ashes finale to explain Life on Mars

The ambiguity of the storyline - as well as the questions raised in its sequel show - will all be resolved by the end of the upcoming third series of Ashes to Ashes. “The idea is to unify the two shows,” Matthew Graham told Digital Spy. “Series three unifies Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes and makes them one show. By the time you get halfway through series three of Ashes To Ashes, you will actually feel like you’re watching series five of Life On Mars!”

He added: “In a way what we’re saying is that we’re going to finally explain the mythology we’ve created. And in theory, there will be no mystery left.”

Graham also confirmed that there are no plans for a new spinoff show following the conclusion of Ashes to Ashes. “This is it, this is the end and I’ve written the last ever lines I will ever write for Gene Hunt. There’s no way we could do another series after this. There would be no mystery left.”
