SAM: I went someplace, Mum. And every day, I woke up in that place, and I told myself, “I’m alive.” And I was. In some ways, more than I’ve ever been. You know, a… a barman… A barman once told me that you know when you’re alive. Because you can feel. And you know when you’re not. Because you can’t feel anything. I made a promise, Mum. I made a promise to someone who I care about very much.
RUTH: Then they’ve got nothing to worry about. ‘Cause you always keep your promises.Life on Mars, 2.08

Top 5 jear worthy TV scenes #5. Sam wakes up | Life on Mars
This whole episode is perfection, but this scene, oh man. Waking up is what Sam has been working toward this whole time, and yet when he wakes up, he begins to realize that this isn’t what he wants. It’s an incredibly bittersweet and largely unstated realization, and his conversation with his mother breaks my heart every time. When he finally makes his choice on the roof, the use of Life on Mars, the song that has followed him through from the very beginning, it’s pretty much one of the most chilling (in a good way) sequences I’ve ever seen, tied with his initially waking up in the past. The first time I watched this, and every time after, this part has always reduced me to tears.
